The huge Rathfinny vineyard lies just south of Alfriston and the owners have produced a marked walking trail among the vineyards. On Sunday 19^th July, eleven of us started the walk from the car park by the main building complex housing the winery and restaurant. We walked around the buildings admiring the vineyards, and continued, first in a westerly direction, then descending between the dead-straight rows of vines, passing by the flint barns, now converted into holiday accommodation. Reaching the valley, we continued along the bottom edge of the vineyard to the far end, where we started to climb, first within the vineyard and then onto the top of the Downs, from where there were great views in all directions, of the sea, the Downs and the Weald. After proceeding along the crest of the Downs, we began our descent going into woods where there was a flurry of butterflies. The wooded track descended eventually to Alfriston, from where it was a short walk beside the road, to the entrance to the Rathfinny Estate. The final stage of the walk was along the Estate drive, starting with a rather steep couple of hundred yards. In view of the heat, most of the group elected to sit on the bank, while the three car drivers climbed the hill and returned to the car park via the vineyards. A most enjoyable walk, led by Alan.
