Thirteen set out in the light rain from Pevensey and Westham Station on the last day of June to discover, or rediscover the Pevensey Levels and Castle. After a short walk through the suburbs of Westham we went through a farm yard and out into the fields. By the time we crossed a busy A27 we were out of the rain and packing away our raincoats and on to the Levels; marshland that was drained in the Middle Ages.
We followed Pevensey Haven, the closest thing to a river in the area, upstream to Rickney, our halfway point. We crossed the Haven and headed back south, leaving Herstmonceux Observatory on the northern skyline. After a short walk along a quiet road we were back among the sheep on the Levels, It was then a 10 minute walk to our coffee (or ice cream) break at Chilley Farm shop cafe. Replenished, we headed back, crossing the A27 and on to Pevensey Castle. The walk formally ended there as some headed back while others visited the castle. The walk was a very flat five miles and three hours including a healthy (or not) coffee break. And we all appreciated our luck with the weather as the showers stayed away and we even got some sun but not the heat of the previous week. Tony led the walk. Or at least he was responsible.
