On Wednesday 20th May, nine walkers set off from the village car park at Barcombe Cross. We crossed the High Street and turned into a path running alongside the allotments, containing some impressively creative mermaid and pirate scarecrows. Whether the crows were impressed is not clear! The path next took us alongside the sports ground and the play area, where the zip wire proved irresistible to one of our members! We crossed the track of the disused railway line and walked through Sewells Farm, passing a field of spruce trees presumably awaiting Christmas. There was a field full of sheep with lambs which were gambolling in an engaging fashion and we stopped to watch them and take photos. Next, our route turned northwards across fields and a couple of streams before going east towards Knowlands Wood.
We passed through a tunnel under the old railway track to reach the wood. As well as being managed for timber, the wood is a nature reserve. It is privately owned but the owner generously has put up signs saying that responsible walkers are welcome. It is a delightful spot and alive with birdsong. We returned to the village across the fields. The walk was led by Anne.
