The walk was led by Mary Burke of Lewes Guided Walks. A large group of 22 plus a dog explored the Twittens, once the Saxon Lanes, on the South Side of Lewes High Street. We started at the bottom of Broomans Lane in Friars Walk and then explored about ten of the ancient twittens climbing up three of them: Church Twitten, St Andrews Lane & Keere Street and walking down Walwers Lane and Watergate Lane. A surprising number of Twittens are named after ancient churches that no longer exist. We were also interested in the different types of flint work on buildings and walls and found signs of timber framed buildings and other features such as mathematical tiles. Lewes is full of fascinating history and we were lucky to have a nice sunny morning without any mud to trek through.
