On Wednesday 5th August, the weather was perfect for walking; sunny but with a breeze to keep the temperature bearable. Ten members of the group set off from the car park in Firle village. We were joined by Julian Wilkes, who is arranging the Group’s 2027 walking holiday on Exmoor (wilkeswaks.co.uk) Julian wanted to meet the group and assess what level of walks would be suitable for us.

We strolled through the village to the old coach road and walked along it eastwards before turning right to make the long climb to the top of the Downs. Here we followed the South Downs Way, enjoying spectacular views in every direction. The wind was surprisingly strong and we were glad of the shelter when we finally started our descent. 

We stopped for a coffee break at the foot of the Downs and then followed a wooded path to rejoin the coach road back to Firle. A detour took us to a gate into Firle Park and we completed our walk by crossing the park with views of the magnificent Firle Place. A visit to the Ram pub for a drink in the garden was a welcome finish to the morning. The walk was led by Anne.
