What a difference a week makes! Last Tuesday's walk was cold, wet and windy. This walk took place on a mild, calm day under a beautiful blue sky.
As before we caught the number 29 bus from Lewes but this time alighted at the Falmer Village stop. Crossing the noisy A27 on the footbridge, we walked northwards up the quiet road past the University sports ground and then turned right onto a narrow footpath This path had been very muddy in the past but has now been gravelled, making for much easier walking. The path sloped steadily uphill into the Downs, providing magnificent views of Firle Beacon in the distance. Skylarks were flying all around us - not yet singing but a welcome sight nevertheless. Further on a large flock of rooks crossed our path and perched all along the fence post. They looked rather sinister, as if auditioning for parts in a Hitchcock horror film! Perhaps they were planning to target the noisy party of clay pigeon shooters in the valley to our left.
After a brief stop for coffee, we reached the South Downs Way at Black Cap and followed it downhill in the direction of the race track. We walked along Landport Bottom and down past the prison. Then various members of our group departed to find their quickest way home, so eventually just two of our original nine walkers ended up in the High Street. The walk was led by Anne.
