Sunday 29th March was a lovely bright morning and six of us stepped off the bus at the Eastbourne Downs Golf Club and walked down the hill towards Beachy Head. We crossed the road at the junction of Warren Hill and Beachy Head Road and continued on grassy paths towards our coffee break at RAF Bomber Command Memorial.
On the way, we had lovely views of Eastbourne and the calm sea and unbelievably white gulls on the ground in front of us. Leaving the memorial, there was a fleeting glimpse of the lighthouse below us which was operational since 1902. As we continued along the cliff top towards Belle Tout, the wind increased but it was still a lovely morning with many people and dogs walking in both directions.
We took the path below Belle Tout, which runs parallel with the Beachy Head road. After we had crossed this road, we walked inland along a narrow road going towards the Cornish farm. We passed through a gate and took the path that runs between fields of sheep towards East Dean - where our cars were parked.
Along the way we heard and saw skylarks and a kestrel and, at Birling Manor, there were a few unusual-looking chickens of various colours. In the woods above Gilberts Drive, we heard rooks and saw many jackdaws in the fields. An undulating walk of about 6 miles led by Hazel.
