Ashdown Forest

27 July 2025

This was the first joint walk of the Lewes Footpaths Group and the Plumpton and District Footpath Society. There was an inauspicious start, caused by a “Road Closed” sign a couple of miles before Pooh Car Park in Chuck Hatch, where we were due to assemble. This entailed drivers from Lewes having to do a 10-mile diversion, only to discover that the road wasn’t closed at all – no one had bothered to remove the sign! Five members from the Lewes Group were introduced to seven members from Plumpton and we then set off in a southerly direction, climbing up to the A A Milne and E H Shepard Memorial, from where there were great views, stretching all the way to the North Downs. Having paid homage to these originators of the Pooh stories and consumed some sweets and cherries, we proceeded further uphill with more magnificent views, before beginning our descent and return to Chuck Hatch. The walk was led by Norm from the Plumpton group. Members from both groups enjoyed the walk and meeting new people. We got back just in time for the start of the Lionesses’ victorious match.
